Item Description...
A former ballboy for the Baltimore Colts describes his reunion with one of his favorite players, Joe Ehrmann, a one-time defensive lineman who became an ordained minister and who has developed a program called "Building Men for Others," an innovative approach that teaches high-school boys what it means to be a man. 125,000 first printing.

Publishers Description
The bestselling inspirational book in which the author reunites with a childhood football hero, now a minister and coach, and witnesses a revelatory demonstration of the true meaning of manhood.
Joe Ehrmann, a former NFL football star and volunteer coach for the Gilman high school football team, teaches his players the keys to successful defense: penetrate, pursue, punish, love. Love? A former captain of the Baltimore Colts and now an ordained minister, Ehrmann is serious about the game of football but even more serious about the purpose of life. "Season of Life" is his inspirational story as told by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jeffrey Marx, who was a ballboy for the Colts when he first met Ehrmann.
Ehrmann now devotes his life to teaching young men a whole new meaning of masculinity. He teaches the boys at Gilman the precepts of his Building Men for Others program: Being a man means emphasizing relationships and having a cause bigger than yourself. It means accepting responsibility and leading courageously. It means that empathy, integrity, and living a life of service to others are more important than points on a scoreboard.
Decades after he first met Ehrmann, Jeffrey Marx renewed their friendship and watched his childhood hero putting his principles into action. While chronicling a season with the Gilman Greyhounds, Marx witnessed the most extraordinary sports program he'd ever seen, where players say "I love you" to each other and coaches profess their love for their players. Off the field Marx sat with Ehrmann and absorbed life lessons that led him to reexamine his own unresolved relationship with his father.
"Season of Life "is a book about what it means to be a man of substance and impact. It is a moving story that will resonate with athletes, coaches, parents--anyone struggling to make the right choices in life.

The Model for Youth Sports Training  Mar 29, 2007
What if every young man and woman in this country had the opportunity to play on a team like the Gilman football team? How would we treat each other then? What would the world look like two generations later? Would the Kingdom of Heaven finally arrive? I have read no better book that describes a real world process for teaching young men how God designed us to relate to each other.
Inspirational reading!  Mar 19, 2007
This was a wonderful book. We originally bought a copy for our son who is a girls' soccer coach, thought it might be of some help. He read it and was so moved, returned it to his Dad to read, thinking of their very positive father/son relationship. We then bought a copy for our son-in-law who is the proud new father of a little boy. It has so much of value in it not just for coaches and fathers, but for anyone who deals with boys of any age...or girls, for that matter. What a wonderful world it would be if we all raised our children and treated others in the ways suggested by this book! Its definitely a "must read"!
Mandatory Reading  Mar 8, 2007
This is a truly powerful book that teaches how to raise a man and only uses football as the backdrop. I wish I had read this book before ever being allowed to coach a child or for that matter having a child of my own. This should be a must read for fathers and coaches of all men. Outstanding!
What coaching should be about.  Jan 20, 2007
I got into teaching 31 years ago because I wanted to coach, teach and lift others to a higher plane. I have been tocuhed by many fellow coaches whom I wanted to imulate ... not just for success, but for the way they encouraged their charges to seek a worthwhile life. Some things I picked up ... Tell my players I love them ... this was a bit awkward ... but the scene in Hoisers where coach Dale looks his boys in the eyes and says he loves them moved me to do it in the same way. The next game we have ... before our prayer ... I looked every one of my boys in the eye and told them I loved them ... that night our leading scorer collapsed and died. I am so thankful he heard me say that I loved him ... I hope he knew I meant it.
This book helped focus me on my goal of helping my players become better people.
I enjoyed it so much I bought 5 and gave them out as Christmas presents.
Helping my players understand the importance of not believing the lies of false manhood, and seeking to be good friends, good teammates, good boy friends, good sons, good husbands, fathers and on and on.
What a great mission.

Every coach should have to read this book; along with the player's parents. A must book for parenting as well.
